Block Printing also known as relief print, is one of the oldest techniques,  and has been around for thousands of years.  There is evidence that it existed as early as the fifth century BC, with roots in India, China and Japan.

There are many different techniques, but it is essentially using a carved material covered in ink to transfer an image on to paper or fabric.  Block printing can be done with wood, linoleum, rubber among other materials.

Block prints make beautiful cushions, throws, runners for bedding.

Having an ASTM rating of either 1-2, indicates  permanence. They are lightfast so they will neither fade nor break down over time

For Bed Linen,the higher the thread count, the more luxurious the feel.

Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch. The higher the thread count, the softer the sheet and the better it  will wear or soften over time.

Bed linen ranges from 200 – 2000 thread count.

There are other criteria to consider as well such as the quality of cotton which makes a significant difference in the “hand” or “feel” of the fabric.

Then we have strands, the longer the pieces of cotton that is woven, the better the quality. 

Generally, short strands of fiber  break easily causing “pilling” or a “balling” effect on the surface of the fabric.

SATIN, not to be mistaken for SATEEN, is man-made fibre used for bedding. Although sensuous to touch, these fibers have low moisture absorbency.

When selecting satin for bed sheets, look for “woven” fabric. This is the only way you are going to get high thread count, smooth, silky action from your satin sheets.

Silk  is a natural fibre made from silk worms raised in captivity in temperature-controlled environments that are free from predators.

The momme weight (the weight of 100 yards of silk, 45 inches wide, in pounds) of silk sheet can range from 6-30 mm.

Good quality bed sheets can be machine washed on a gentle cycle in cold water and do not require dry cleaning, as long as a silk-friendly detergent is used. As you continue to wash silk sheets, they will lose some of their luster, but will actually become softer after a few washes. In fact, many people find that they like their silk sheets even more after they have been washed a few times.
